Thierry Fischer concludes his 14 year tenure as Music Director of the Utah Symphony with performances of Messiaen’s all encompassing Turangalîla Symphony, Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” with the NOVA Ensemble and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square – all monumental, reflective pieces befitting the closure of a 14 year long music directorship.
Looking back on his tenure of the Utah Symphony Thierry Fischer says,
“When I arrived in Utah in 2009, I could never have imagined the many unbelievable and fulfilling experiences the next fourteen years would bring. I look back on playing my part in Utah’s rich cultural heritage with much gratitude.
I commend the fantastic musicians of the Utah Symphony who have consistently surpassed my expectations and inspired me with their artistry. I thank the board and staff whose belief and support laid the ground for the orchestra to excel. And last but certainly not least, I want to express my appreciation for our wonderful audiences who make our work possible and meaningful. Without you, our light would not shine as brightly as it does throughout all of Utah.
It’s impossible to highlight only a few of many rewarding projects we have done in the last fourteen years. I’m immensely proud of our commitment to commissioning and performing new works of aspiring composers; of our state-wide education programs; and of the top class artists we fostered relationships with over the years. I will never forget celebrating the orchestra’s 75th anniversary season at Carnegie Hall, the opportunity to play music against the backdrop of some of Utah’s most spectacular scenery on our statewide tours, or the legacy we leave through our many recordings together. These memories will always be a source of great joy for me.
Thank you for letting me have a truly exhilarating experience in Utah, for giving me the chance to discover the beauties of this extraordinary state and for the manifold musical journeys we made together throughout the past 14 years.”
Fischer will return regularly to conduct the Utah Symphony as their Music Director Emeritus in the coming seasons.
